Ad Crux
Throughout art history, religious imagery has frequently employed ascent as a symbol of striving toward the divine. From the heavenly ladders in medieval Christian iconography to the towering spires of Gothic cathedrals, the act of climbing has often represented the journey toward salvation or unity with a higher power. These themes are also present in the art of other cultures and religions, where mountains, stairways, and ladders are seen as paths to enlightenment, transcendence, and self-actualization.
By intertwining climbing with religious imagery, I invite viewers to reflect on how these age-old symbols of aspiration still resonate in contemporary life. The struggle to scale a mountain, to ascend toward a goal, is a universal experience—one that connects us to both the past and the present, reminding us that the climb, in both art and life, is as much about the effort as it is about the destination.
